Scientific Discovery in the Layperson

چکیده

In this chapter, we argue that the process of scientific discovery is in many ways similar to the process that the layperson uses to learn and evaluate predictive relationships, with the point that that these techniques should be incorporated into models of scientific discovery. We review some findings that illustrate constraints on human learning and show how these findings manifest themselves in scientific discoveries. We concentrate on two aspects of the discovery process: evaluation of evidence, and scientific rhetorics, illustrating these aspects by two programs that perform common-sense reasoning tasks. OCCAM uses a theory of causality to constrain the learning of causal relationships. We show that this system can use the same mechanism to learn about the process of catalysis. ABDUL/ILANA models the process of argumentation. We show how the system can represent competing scientific hypothesis and use argumentation strategies to direct the reasoning process. We conclude with some observations about the consequences of this view of discovery. 1

A writing-intensive course improves biology undergraduates' perception and confidence of their abilities to read scientific literature and communicate science.

Most scientists agree that comprehension of primary scientific papers and communication of scientific concepts are two of the most important skills that we can teach, but few undergraduate biology courses make these explicit course goals. We designed an undergraduate neuroimmunology course that uses a writing-intensive format. Using a mixture of primary literature, writing assignments directed ...

Abortion debates in Finland and the Republic of Ireland: textual analysis of experiential thinking and argumentation in parliamentary and layperson discussions

BACKGROUND The ethical discussion about abortion has been polarized in Finland and the Republic of Ireland, two European countries with very different abortion legislation (liberal vs. highly restrictive). The aim of the present study was to analyze experiential thinking patterns and argumentative strategies in political and layperson debates regarding induced abortion. METHODS The content of...

Science Communication to the General Public: Why We Need to Teach Undergraduate and Graduate Students this Skill as Part of Their Formal Scientific Training.

Communication of science to the general public is increasingly recognized as a responsibility of scientists (Greenwood, 2001; Leshner, 2003), yet how do scientists learn these skills? While scientists are thoroughly trained in research methodologies, analytical skills, and the ability to communicate with other scientists, they usually receive no explicit training in communication of scientific ...
